Drafting / Drawings

Standards and conventions for architectural and interior design drawing sets at Davignon Martin Architecture & Interior Design.

Articles

Drawings are further subcategorized by discipline, each of which has their own semantics for the organization of drawings.

General; Applies to All Disciplines

  •  Scheduling Type Marks  — Type mark codes for architecture and interior design schedules
  •  Drawing Scales   — Architectural and engineering scale tables, unit conversions, text height charts
  •  Revising Drawings  — Revision tracking and change management can make or break a project. Make it easy to figure out what's different and it will be much easier to get others on board with your ideas.

Architecture

  •  A - Architectural Drawings   — Overview of a set of architectural drawings.
  •  A - Sheet Standards — Contains page specific standards and instructions to create them.
  •  A - Drawing Packages  — Package types (DP, Unit, Marketing, Pricing, IFC) and what each contains.
  •  A - Markups

Interior Design

  • ID - Interior Design Drawings — ID drawing series (ID000, ID200, ID800)

Marketing Drawings

  •  Marketing Drawings  — Types of marketing drawings (blacklines, area analyses, renderings)

Discipline Designators

Design projects involve multi-disciplinary teams. Each discipline is identified by an industry-standard single-letter designator, used as a prefix for drawing sheet numbers.

Project Phases

Project phases define the stages of design and documentation from initial analysis through construction. They correspond to the A - Drawing Packages developed at each stage.

FB — Feasibility

An analysis considering all relevant project factors to determine whether the project is viable. Inputs and outputs vary widely by project scope.

SD — Schematic Design

Rough construction drawings providing a general overview of basic features and construction — used to confirm the concept fits project criteria and to establish high-level budgets, timelines, and deliverables.

DD — Design Development

Finalization of design with materials specified, window and door locations set, and general structural details defined. Yields detailed site plan, floor plans, elevations, and section drawings with full dimensions.

DP — Development Permit

A permit approved by a delegated authority specifying how development is to occur on a given parcel of land. Once approved, it is registered against the land title and is binding on future owners.

CDOC — Construction Drawings

Drawings used as the guide for construction. Produced over months or years in coordination with Engineering and other consultants. Broken into subsets — see  A - Architectural Drawings  for the full PCD, IFC and CA breakdown.
