Cardinal Directions

  • Cardinal directions are the four primary points on a compass: North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W). They are universally used for navigation, map reading, and orientation.
  • North: Points towards the geographic North Pole (0° on a compass).
  • South: Points towards the geographic South Pole (180°).
  • East: The direction where the sun rises (90°).
  • West: The direction where the sun sets (270°).
  • Common Mnemonic To easily remember the clockwise order (North, East, South, West) on a standard map or compass, people often use the phrase "Never Eat Soggy Weiners".
  • Intercardinal Directions Between each primary point are the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions, which help provide more specific bearings:
  • Northeast (NE): Between North and East (45°)
  • Southeast (SE): Between South and East (135°).
  • Southwest (SW): Between South and West (225°).
  • Northwest (NW): Between North and West (315°).

Progress Construction Drawing (PCD)

  • A set of construction drawings that are considered to be work in progress.

Planning (City-Planning)

  • City planning, also known as urban planning or town planning, is the process of developing and designing land use and the built environment in urban, suburban, and rural areas. It involves organizing and regulating how land is used, including the physical layout of buildings, transportation systems, infrastructure, parks, and public spaces. The aim is to create sustainable, efficient, and livable communities that balance social, economic, and environmental needs.
  • City planning encompasses a broad range of activities such as zoning, land-use regulation, infrastructure development, transportation planning, environmental protection, and public welfare considerations. It is an interdisciplinary field drawing on civil engineering, architecture, social sciences, and policy-making. Planning ensures orderly growth, manages resources and services, supports economic development, and addresses social equity and environmental sustainability.
  • In summary, city planning is the strategic efforts to shape the physical form and function of urban areas to improve the quality of life for residents now and in the future.

Planner (City-Planner)

  • A city planner—also called an urban planner or town planner—is a professional who develops, evaluates, and helps implement plans for the use of land and resources in urban areas. Their main role is to ensure efficient, sustainable, and organized growth of cities and communities by managing land use, guiding building construction, drafting zoning and land use policies, and planning new infrastructure such as roads, parks, schools, and housing.

Plans Examiner

  • A Plans Examiner is a professional responsible for evaluating construction and architectural plans to ensure they comply with applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances. Their primary duties include reviewing applications and construction documents for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, verifying that plans meet structural, fire, safety, and accessibility standards, and ensuring all work is in accordance with regulatory requirements. Plans Examiners may also confer with architects, builders, engineers, and property owners, interpret codes, recommend changes to achieve compliance, and occasionally conduct on-site inspections as a follow-up to plan reviews
