Customized templates may be considered in the future but this template covers the basics and should be enough to get most projects off the ground. The Base template is a lean, simple and efficient template that covers the basics.
The default we use is Century Gothic as it is widely available on most machines.
You will see the initials DM throughout the template; this abbreviation signifies a setting, family or other name that was created by our office.
There are two different legends in the project:
- The
DM Base Template legend contains all lines, filled regions, tags and other families included in the template. - The
DM Detail Components legend contains detail items that you can use in 2D detailing views.
This page explains how the Base template is built, as well as outline any of the settings within it.
You will notice the DM prefix used throughout our templates and libraries. This identifier allows to easily identify content loaded from outside our office and allows for us to keep our files clean.
In order to further organize the content in our file, we also have a standard naming convention for different family categories within Revit. This table shows the naming of each category inclusive of the prefix:
DM_Detail_Item_######_ [1] DM_Generic_Subcategory_ [2] DM_Specialty_Subcategory_ [2-1] ## Default Project Alignment ### Level 1 Height In the template, Level I is set to 0mm/0'-0" by default. Project Origin and Internal Origins are not to be used to define geodetic elevations, rather the Survey Point should be used. Reference this workflow on setting a project to geodetic elevation instead.
If your project has a basement or underground component; it is suggested that these floor be below your project origin - this means that Level 01 or your Ground Floor is always 0mm/0'-0".
The Internal Origin, Project Origin
Sheet numbering is fixed in our office, there is ample documentation on how that works.
You will also see on projects, especially ones with multiple buildings, that Sheet Collections are used quite extensively. Your Project Browser will always be organized by Sheet Collection; this behavior can not be altered. Furthermore you will see that the template is configured with the Project Browser - Sheets as follows:300300300
A sample of what the project browser would look like on a more complex project can be seen here:400
There is one additional sheet in the template called DM-BIM - Working Sheet, it is set to be the default sheet that you see every time you open the project - it is meant to be a dashboard and not to be printed. This sheet is responsible for making your project purge proof, meaning you won't accidentally purge the Base content, the default sheet contains:
- Critical Project Information
- Title Blocks
- Working Schedules
- Template Legends
These are the basic text styles included in the template - the font is always . For the actual settings used in each text style you can refer to Base Settings > Text Styles These are the line weights in the Base template and their corresponding AutoCAD line weights:You can also see the detailed Revit settings in Base Settings > Line Weights These are the basic dimension styles included in the template - the font is always .
